What do you think?

I was asked by a couple of friends my opinion on this question.............

What do you think of random generators picking winners on challenge blogs, rather than the winners being chosen for the quality of their entry?

Personally, I would never enter a challenge on a site that choses the winner randomly, but then again I have only ever enterd two challenges. I think if people take time to create and submit an entry, the site owners should take time to look at the entries and make their choice on the entry that meets the criteria of the challenge. Choosing a winner randomly is a bit of a cop-out, but that's just my opinion.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? (just out of interest)

here here I totally agree. If someone has taken up a challenge then the challenge is to produce something that meets the criteria. If picking with a random generator, how do the blog DT's actually know that the criteria has been met.

Well sorry I am going to put the cat amongst the pigeons here, whilst I can totally see where you are coming from I dont think the generator is meant as an insult, I personally enter some of the challenges purely for the fun and challenge of it, the prize is just an added bonus, I certainly dont enter to win, I enter to make myself try something I might not have tried otherwise, I like the fact that everyone joins in for the fun of it and most of them dont take it seriously, it is just meant as fun. Looking at it from another perspective, some people lack the confidence to enter challenges if they believe they are not good enough to win, I think sometimes levelling the playing field gives those people with less confidence an opportunty at something otherwise they would find too daunting to enter, I am all for that, if you like your work and are happy with it, you shouldn't need a prize to quantify it and it shouldn't matter how other people judge it. Just my opinion and I certainly dont want to upset any apple carts, at the end of the day it is personal choice, you are doing the right thing - if you dont like the way a challenge is judged then dont enter it, seems like the only way to suit everyone.
On an entirely different note - thanks for the visit today it was lovely to see you all, take care and see you soon XXX

I'm with you Sue. I don't like the random generator, either. I think the same, you took time to make it I think they should take time to view it. Love all your tags! Have a Merry Christmas!

Oh I'm glad I have a couple of comments!!!!! Tracey, you have put a new insight onto it for me! Yeah I see what you mean here. I suppose looking at it now, it depends on weather you are a serious or fun crafter! I have only ever entered a challenge on two occasions, never getting a mention, but thoroughly enjoyed doing what I entered, AND will enter again (if it works when I try to link up, lol). So I suppose enjoyment is the main reason for entering although a mention must boost your confidence if chosen by 'judges' rather than randomly. So I suppose, some for and some against, I'm on the fence a bit now lol.
Zandra, I think you have taken the view that maybe entrants just like to feel that their entry has been at least looked at after making the effort to enter, good point.
It's great to hear different views, wonder if there will be any more? x

Morning - well heres my pennies worth on the subject. I personally like the sites that DONT user Ramdon Generator mainly because I like to feel that what I produce is being looked at (makes it feel more personal for me). The challenge site I enter for every month is not for the prize but purely for the enjoyment of that months theme and ‘feel’ and to see how others and interpret and create the theme. I’m not a very confident person so to get comments from the DT members and other participators means an awful lot to me - Its nice to know that people have taken the time to look at what you have created

Thanks for that Polly, lots of really good points again. I know exactly where you are coming from when you say you are not confident and comments and mentions boost your confidence, I fully agree. There is nothing better than someone giving feedback. Plus knowing the organisers have been genuinely interested and looked at the entry makes it seem worthwhile. As you say it's not about the prize or winning it's all about it being 'seen'. It's great to see it from yet another angle. x

I am not into random generators and didn't bother to enter a challenge that ran it that way..it just didn't seem right, however I have noticed on smaller challenge sites people tend to vote for the same ones or the organisers all the time and thats not fair either...it seems it can be who you know not what you can do sometimes.
I know as a judge I try to go with the person who captured the spirit of the challenge rather than the most technically competant crafter...it's difficult choosing when you know how much effort people put in and you want to boost everyones confidence but your votes are limited...I know a kind word in my comment box makes my day more than prizes!!

Yeah definately a nice comment, as I mentioned before, at least that shows you effort has been looked at and acknowleged, which I think is great. So thanks for your input too Ruth, again some intersting comments regarding smaller sites. It's so interesting to hear people's views. x

I have ran across your blog by someone else's and just have to leave my comment here. I am on 2 DT blogs and we DO use the random generator. We use this to give Everyone a chance. You know as well as I do there are some crafters that are better than others and it isn't fair to always pick the ones that do a great job. The random generator gives everyone a chance at winning a prize but the main reason for the Challenge Blog is not for prizes but for fun. This is just my in put on the subject, and we do know who has met the challenges and who hasn't. We might chose by random generator but all entry's are visited by DT members. Thanks!!!

Thanks Donalda for taking time to comment, I see where you are coming from, definately. Since the original post went up I have had lots of points left, it is good to hear the ins and outs of the systems, so thanks again for the information. x

Yes there is lots of different views for random generator that is for sure lol But for us it is just the fair way to judge everyone equally! Hugs

I agree with you Sue, if people have taken the time to do the challenge the people hosting it should take the time to pick.

Hi Sue - just doing a bit of blog-hopping (as I often do around midnight!), and would like to say that I agree with Tracey and Donalda - the random generator gives ALL entrants an equal chance of winning, no matter what their skill level, and this is a good thing. Also, it isn't compulsory to enter the challenges - I don't always enter my projects, as I run my blog primarily for enjoyment and the sharing of ideas. However, I did win a prize recently, via Random Generator, and a lovely prize it was too!. In another challenge where the prize was a 6-week Guest DT spot, my card was chosen as the winner by the Design Team members. I have also entered one or two other challenges in the past, just for fun, where no prizes were offered at all. The choice is ours I guess!

Hi sue just catchin up after a few busy days and saw this. Different views and different reasons for them here and that is the problem with judgement. Who is to say that this is actually better than that? a lot of those that do exercise such judegement tend to select entries that are the same as or similar to the majority because that is what they like. Personally i prefer challanges that do not offer a prize just the opportunity to make something of a different idea.
point in case did you see School of Sattchi? What did you think of the winner?
